Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, Member of Parliament for Manhyia South
The Member of Parliament for Manhyia South, Lawyer Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah, has criticised the government for failing to declare a national day of mourning for Ghanaian traders killed in a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso.
The MP described the government’s approach as “highly insensitive,” stating that the country had shown insufficient concern for the victims.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament on Thursday, February 20, 2026, he noted that all national institutions, including Parliament, failed to pay tribute to the victims in a befitting manner.
He expressed frustration that statements on the floor could have been delivered in a more solemn tone, adding that Members of Parliament hold office because of the sacrifices of ordinary citizens.
The government had earlier confirmed that a truck transporting Ghanaian tomato traders was targeted in a terrorist attack in northern Burkina Faso, resulting in the deaths of eight people.
The MP called on Parliament to establish a committee of inquiry to gather full details of the attack to guide future decisions.
“They mourned with us when the House lost its members, and so we expected the House to reciprocate the gesture,” he said.
