Member of Parliament for Effiduase/Asokore, Nana Ayew Afriye, has dismissed claims that payments to healthcare providers under the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) were delayed.
Speaking on the floor of Parliament, on March 5, 2026, he said the NHIA inherited a healthy financial position from the previous NPP government and had no outstanding debts to providers.
Stop politicising health care - Dr Ayew Afriye charges
“As of January 7, 2025, the NHIA had a positive balance of 1 billion. All payments up to October had been made, and the $220 million disbursed over the following four months for November, December, January, and February were drawn from this balance,” Dr Afriye stated.
He emphasised that conventional processing times for claims meant that payments for November would naturally be processed in the following months.
“So, when you calculate payments of $220 million for four months…you did not inherit a poor position from the NHIA, and there were no delays in provider payments,” he said.
Dr Afriye challenged the President’s claim during his State of the Nation Address on February 27, 2026, suggesting delays in disbursements to service providers.

He insisted that a balanced view of NHIA’s finances should be presented to avoid politicising social health insurance financing.
