United Party Communications Director Solomon Owusu has said that Ghana must stop treating South Africa like “nothing happened” after recent xenophobic attacks forced hundreds of Ghanaians to flee the country.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, he insisted there must be consequences for what Ghanaian traders and residents suffered in South Africa.

“I still insist there has to be a tit for tat,” he said.

According to him, Ghana cannot continue normal diplomatic relations while Ghanaians are allegedly being attacked, displaced and forced to abandon their businesses.

“I do not understand why the High Commission of South Africa is still in this country. What are we doing now?” he questioned.

Solomon Owusu, however, praised the Ghanaian government for quickly evacuating citizens from South Africa.

“Our people were facing an existential threat. They were being attacked left, right and centre,” he said.

He also commended Ghana’s High Commissioner to South Africa for openly condemning the attacks.

“He stood for the principle. He called them out directly,” Owusu stated.

The politician argued that many Ghanaians are angry because they believe South African authorities have not done enough to protect foreign nationals.

“Nobody can say at this moment that we are cool with South Africa,” he added.
