Ahead of the 2028 general election, Minister of Food and Agriculture Eric Opoku has indicated his readiness to contest for the flagbearership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and lead Ghana if party members deem him the most suitable candidate for the position.

Speaking in an interview on Asempa FM on June 2, 2026, the minister stated that he remains receptive to any opportunity that may arise in his political career, emphasising that his involvement in politics has always been driven by a desire to serve the nation.

“I’m open to any good thing politics gives me. I came into politics with the commitment to serve,” he stated.

Eric Opoku explained that throughout his public life, he has focused on finding solutions to challenges and delivering results wherever he has been assigned responsibilities.

According to him, his ability to resolve problems has been one of his defining strengths.

“I’m a troubleshooter. Any problems that come my way, I’m able to solve them,” he said.

The Minister of Food and Agriculture further indicated that he would not shy away from the responsibility of leading the NDC into the 2028 general election if party members decide that he is the best candidate to succeed President John Mahama and steer the affairs of both the party and the country.

“So if today the party members believe that I’m the best person to lead the party and the country, I am willing to,” he added.

While acknowledging the possibility of pursuing higher political office, Opoku stressed that his foremost concern is making a meaningful impact through public service.

He noted that leadership should be measured by the positive changes it brings to people's lives and the lasting legacy it leaves behind for future generations.

“The most important thing is that we do something that we will be recognised positively for in history,” he said.

The minister’s remarks come amid discussions over who could lead the NDC into the 2028 election, with names such as Julius Debrah, Cassiel Ato Forson, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Haruna Iddrisu, and others being widely mentioned as potential contenders for the party’s presidential candidacy.
