Reports of talk with Mahama over a third term are untrue - NDC Council of Elders

Reports suggesting that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Council of Elders met President John Dramani Mahama to discuss an alleged third-term agenda have been dismissed by council member Dr Christine Amoako-Nuamah.

In an interview on Citi FM on June 3, 2026, Dr Christine Amoako-Nuamah dismissed suggestions that the council had met the President on the matter, stating, “I am not aware of any such meeting.”

She explained that the Council of Elders primarily serves as an advisory body within the party and is not mandated to dictate decisions to party leadership or prevent individuals from pursuing political ambitions.

According to Dr Amoako-Nuamah, the council's role is to offer guidance and counsel when necessary, noting that remaining silent during challenging moments within the party would undermine the purpose of the elders' institution.

“If you are home and something is going wrong and you cannot speak about it, then what kind of elder are you?” she questioned, stressing the obligation of senior party figures to share their experience and advice when needed.

She further clarified that the council is not established to block anyone from seeking higher office, including the presidency, but rather to provide direction informed by years of political experience.

“Nobody is trying to stop anybody, but we are a very experienced group of people, people who have been around for quite some time,” she said.

Meanwhile, reports published by the Herald Newspaper claimed that President Mahama used the purported meeting to reiterate his opposition to any attempt to seek a third presidential term.

According to the reports, he reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana’s constitutional provision limiting presidents to two terms during what was described as a high-level engagement with the NDC Council of Elders.
