A legal member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Faisal Ibrahim Sesey, has called on President John Dramani Mahama and the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to protect the party’s communications team member, Dennis Miracles Aboagye, describing him as someone who has long championed the country’s interests.

Speaking to GhanaWeb on July 13, 2026, after a protest demanding Aboagye’s release from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Sesey said many issues within the ruling party have only come to light because of Aboagye’s vigilance.

According to him, it is through Aboagye’s efforts that Ghanaians are becoming aware of what is happening behind the scenes in government.

“It was Dennis Miracles Aboagye who raised the cocoa issue and engaged them (CSOs). The government has power, resources, and freedom, they can even fly private jets to Kumasi for funerals and return. Yet it took Dennis to raise these important issues affecting cocoa farmers, people who have sustained this country for centuries. For someone doing such public service, the government should be protecting him, not arresting him and denying him access to legal counsel,” he said.

The lawyer added that denying Miracles Aboagye access to his legal team is unconstitutional and an abuse of his rights.

He emphasised that it is unlawful to persecute someone who has the country’s interest at heart and consistently raises issues of national concern.

He therefore concluded that what Aboagye is experiencing amounts to outright persecution.

“Once you arrest a person, constitutionally you must afford him the right to legal services. Denying him that is an abuse of his rights, rights guaranteed by the constitution and by international law as fundamental human rights,” he stated.

“…You cannot persecute someone who helps by raising alarm bells on key issues like cocoa. Arresting him in this manner, denying him access to family and lawyers, is persecution. What is that? It is a clear abuse, a clear persecution — nothing more, nothing less,” he added.
