Kofi Tonto, an aide to the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) 2028 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has alleged that Dennis Miracles Aboagye is being politically targeted following his arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Speaking in an interview on Peace FM, Tonto claimed that the NPP communicator's arrest was motivated by his criticism of the government.

"Dennis Miracles Aboagye is being persecuted because he is a strong critic of the failing Mahama government. None of these actions will silence him or NPP communicators," he said.

His comments come after some supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) on Monday stormed the offices of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), demanding the immediate release of Aboagye, popularly known as "Miracles."

Aboagye, a former Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee on Decentralisation (IMCCoD), was arrested on Saturday as part of ongoing investigations into the alleged misappropriation of approximately GH¢55 million at the Secretariat.

According to EOCO, the arrest followed months of investigations into alleged financial and procurement-related irregularities at IMCCoD. The investigation also involves the Secretariat's former Accountant, Gerald Appiah, who is being investigated in connection with the same matter.

The arrest has generated sharp political reactions, with the NPP insisting that Aboagye is being unfairly targeted because of his outspoken criticism of the government. However, EOCO maintains that its investigation is based on alleged financial misconduct and forms part of efforts to ensure accountability in the management of public funds.
