'For once, I ask the Minority to act as patriots' - Honu-Nudokpo

Bright Honu-Nudokpo, a hopeful member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Executive Committee (NEC), has called on the Minority in Parliament to put aside what he describes as “hypocrisy” and engage constructively to ensure the effective functioning and success of the 9th Parliament.

His comments follow a disagreement between the Majority and Minority caucuses over the Committee of the Whole’s decision to hold a closed-door session with the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr Johnson Pandit Asiama.

The Governor appeared before Parliament to respond to questions regarding the Bank’s interventions in the foreign exchange market and the sources of foreign exchange used for those operations.

The Minority criticised the decision to exclude the public and the media from the proceedings, alleging that the Majority sought to prevent the Governor from formally acknowledging that the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme, introduced by the previous administration through the Ghana National Gold Board (GoldBod), contributed significantly to foreign exchange reserves and helped stabilise the economy.

In response, the Majority defended the decision, insisting that there was no intention to conceal information. It explained that a closed-door session was necessary to prevent the disclosure of sensitive financial and market-related information that could potentially affect Ghana’s economic stability.

The Governor’s appearance before Parliament followed a formal enquiry by the Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah.

He was expected to provide details on the framework guiding the Bank of Ghana’s foreign exchange interventions, disclose figures on interventions conducted since January 7 last year, and explain the source of the funds and foreign currency used.

Reacting to the development, Honu-Nudokpo expressed disappointment over the Minority’s decision to walk out of the Chamber and address the media, describing the action as a departure from established parliamentary procedures.

He argued that raising allegations outside the formal processes of Parliament does not promote accountability or serve the national interest.

“For once, I ask them to act as patriots,” Honu-Nudokpo stated in an interview on July 17, 2026.

He urged Members of Parliament on the opposition side to prioritise national development over partisan interests, emphasising that constructive engagement and responsible oversight would strengthen the credibility of the legislature and contribute to the country’s progress.
