Nobody wanted John Mahama in NDC anymore after 2016 election defeat - Akamba claims

Former National Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Joshua Hamidu Akamba, has claimed that nobody in the party wanted to see eye to eye with President John Dramani Mahama after he lost the 2016 election to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, but he stood by him.

Speaking on Neat FM, Akamba said he chose to stand by Mahama despite the difficult circumstances following the NDC’s defeat in the 2016 election.

He said his decision to remain loyal to Mahama through the difficult period came at a personal cost, as he made a lot of enemies for standing by President Mahama through thick and thin.

“In 2016, nobody wanted President Mahama in our party anymore after we lost the election, and I stood for him. I stood through thick and thin for President Mahama, and I made a lot of enemies,” Akamba said.

After subsequently playing a role in Mahama’s re-election as President in the 2024 general election, Akamba said he was not interested in receiving any government appointment.

According to him, he does not believe in seeking personal rewards for the work he does for others. He said he is satisfied with his current situation and would rather leave his reward to God than expect one from people he has supported or worked for.

“Unfortunately, I am not interested. I don’t like to take a reward for the good I do for people. I don’t like it. I like my reward to come from my Maker. I am very comfortable,” he noted.

The former NDC National Organiser further explained that accepting a government position at this stage would come with additional financial expectations from people around him.

He said once people become aware that he holds a government position, they would expect him to take on more financial responsibilities, which could significantly increase his expenditure.

Akamba said he would not be able to afford such a lifestyle, suggesting that his decision not to seek an appointment is also influenced by the financial demands that may come with holding public office.

“If I am given a position now, everybody around me will know that now I have a position, so my expenditure will go very high. I cannot afford it,” he said.

He also said he sympathises with some of his colleagues who are currently serving in government, arguing that the expectations placed on people who hold government positions can increase their financial responsibilities.

According to Akamba, some of these officials may also be struggling to meet such expectations, despite being in government. He added that, in his view, some only remain in office because of their commitment to serving the country.

“I can sympathise with a lot of my colleagues who are in government now. They cannot afford it. If not for service for Mother Ghana, I am not sure they are interested,” he added.
