A National Democratic Congress (NDC) constituency chairman hopeful in Nkoranza North, Alhaji Mohammed Gyan, has alleged that four masked gunmen opened fire on his vehicle after a campaign engagement at Madina, raising concerns about security ahead of the party’s constituency elections.

Gyan said he and his campaign team escaped unhurt after the armed men allegedly blocked their route and fired at their vehicle as they attempted to flee.

Recounting the incident, the aspirant said his driver’s quick reaction helped them escape when they spotted the men on the road.

“We had just finished our campaign at Madina and we were returning. Suddenly, we saw four masked men with guns blocking the road ahead of us,” he said.

“Immediately my driver saw them, he was alert and reversed and sped off. As we were moving, they started shooting at our car directly. It was by the grace of God that we are alive today.”

According to Gyan, no injuries were recorded during the incident. However, the circumstances surrounding the alleged shooting, including the identities and motives of the suspected attackers, remain unclear based on the account provided.

The aspirant described the incident as an unprecedented experience in his political career and expressed concern about the use of violence and intimidation in the party’s internal electoral process.

“Since I started following the NDC, I have never experienced such gun violence in our internal politics. This has never happened to me before,” he said.

Gyan condemned the alleged attack and urged party members to maintain peace and unity, warning against the use of intimidation to influence the outcome of the constituency elections.

“We need unity in the NDC. We are one family. This politics of intimidation and violence must stop. We should not use guns to scare our own people,” he said.

“We must unite after this election to build the party.”

The chairman hopeful also appealed to delegates and party leaders to remain calm and resist any attempts to intimidate them as they prepare to elect new constituency executives.

With the constituency elections scheduled for Saturday, Gyan urged delegates to participate in the exercise and support his bid to become the next NDC constituency chairman.

“I am appealing to all delegates and party leaders to come out in their numbers this coming Saturday when the NDC will elect its constituency executives, and vote for me, Alhaji Mohammed Gyan, as your next Constituency Chairman,” he said.

“Vote for unity, vote for peace, vote for development. Together, we will make Nkoranza North stronger.”

The alleged shooting comes at a sensitive time for the NDC in Nkoranza North, with aspirants and their supporters campaigning ahead of the constituency polls.

The incident raises questions about the safety of candidates, campaign teams and delegates during the internal elections. However, further details, including whether a formal complaint has been lodged with the police, whether an investigation has begun and whether security arrangements have been strengthened, were not provided in the account available for this report.

Police confirmation and an independent account of the alleged shooting were not available at the time of publication.
