Deputy Local Government minister, Nii Lantey Vanderpuije has incurred the wrath of parliament over the directive from the ministry instructing Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) to take charge of their local assemblies from tomorrow, Saturday March 14, 2015.

The MPs are accusing their colleague of usurping the powers of the lawmaking chamber by not seeking their approval before issuing the directive since such authority could only be given by the House.

Assembly members will have their tenure expiring by midnight today. Their impending exit could disrupt the activities of many assemblies as the Supreme Court has annulled a planned election to elect new ones.

Vice president Amissah Arthur had earlier this week asked the Attorney General to initiate processes to extend the tenure of assembly members until new district level elections are held.

According to Starr News’ Ibrahim Alhassan who was in Parliament today, some minority MPs urged the local government ministry to withdraw the directive.
