The general secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketia has expressed surprise over the decision of the electoral commission (EC) to open the continuous voter registration exercise without the consent of the various political parties.

According to him, although the existing electoral regulations do not compel the EC to seek permission from the parties before embarking on the exercise, it is in line with good governance to keep the parties in the known.

“I also heard on radio just like anyone that the exercise has begun.

“I was not informed neither was the NDC informed about it but at least they should have informed us to sensitize our members.

“Already, I have heard my colleagues Kwabena Agyepong and Bernard Mornah speaking about it so I will consult them so we decide how to deal with this matter collectively.

“The parties are important stakeholders in the electoral process in this country and so in matters like this, we must be consulted,” Nketia told Kasapa FM Monday.

The NDC's concerns follow a similar one expressed by the general secretary of the main opposition New Patriotic Kwabena Agyepong who has called for the suspension of the exercise until the necessary consultations are made.

The Commission last Friday announced the opening of the register for Ghanaians who have turned 18 and those who could not register in the last exercise
