The National Democratic Congress’ agenda to garner one million votes in the Ashanti region has suffered a setback as two hundred youth of the party in Sawaba, a community in the region have reportedly defected to the opposition New Patriotic Party.

This comes several months after the ruling party launched a project to garner one million votes from the Ashanti region to minimize the fortunes of the NPP in its stronghold.

The over 200 defectors are blaming the governing party of doing little to improve their living conditions.

Sadat Abubakar, leader of the group told Starr News that their condition will deteriorate further if the NDC is given another mandate in next year’s polls.

“We left NDC to the NPP because of the corruption in the NDC…health Insurance helped a lot of us in the zongos but today the health Insurance has collapsed”.

Abubakar added that leaders of the party were made aware of their grievances but nothing was done about.

Meanwhile, the Ashanti regional Deputy Communications Director of NDC Anane Solomon has stated that the group is not part of the party adding that it is a ploy by the NPP to destabilize the NDC.

He added that the NDC’s agenda to galvanise one million votes in the region is on course and would not derailed by reports of defection by an “unknown group”.

"We don’t know this group…they have never been members of the NDC and it is an emphatic statement. This group is not part of the NDC," Asante told host of Starr Today Bernard Nasara Saibu.
