The Bongo District Assembly has elected 36 year old Presidential Staff, Mr Luke Ayamga Atazoona, as the Presiding Member (PM) of the Assembly for a four year term.
The Assembly on two occasions failed to elect a PM and only succeeded in the third attempt.
The PM, who is a development economist attached to the Presidency, polled 40 votes to beat his opponent, Mr Ayinbisa Ayamga Peter, an accountant, who got 12 votes.
The PM elect assured that he would lobby to bring more development projects to the district to help accelerate the pace of development.
Mr Atazoona thanked the members for the confidence reposed in him and appealed to the house to give him the necessary cooperation and support.
He impressed upon the Assembly members to bury their political differences for the sake of development and indicated that poverty should be the enemy to tackle and not partisan politics
“Division will not take us anywhere, Poverty knows no political colours, so let us work collectively to see how we can help the District to develop fast “, he stressed.
Mr Ayinbisa, declared his total support for the PM and pledged to assist him run the activities of the Assembly, stressing “if we leave him alone to work he might not succeed, I am going to give him the needed support as the elections are now over, so colleagues let us give him the maximum support for the sake of development”.
The District Chief Executive for the area, Mr Alexis Ayamdor, urged the Assembly members to share ideas and befriend heads of departments to help speed up development.
The Paramount Chief of the Bongo Traditional Area, Naba Baba Salifu Lemyaarum, in his closing remarks as chairman for the occasion, cautioned the new assembly members not to allow party affiliations to cloud their contributions to debates and meetings in the House.
He urged them to be guided by the needs and concerns of the communities and electoral areas they represent in the discharge of their duties.
