The chairman of the Convention Peoples’ Party (CPP), Prof Edmund Delle, has admitted that his party’s inability to maintain a single candidate for subsequent elections is to blame for its declining share of votes in presidential elections.
The CPP has presented a different candidate since 2000 with George Aggudey, Prof George Hagan (2004), Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom (2008), and Dr Abu Sakara Forster (2012) featuring as standard bearers.
Prof Delle told Class News’ Parker Wilson Tuesday January 19, 2016 such criticisms of the CPP’s inconsistency with flagbearer choices are justified. “I must admit that it has had an effect on the success of the CPP. I have to admit it as the chairman. The continuity is not there.
“These are genuine criticisms and if the party is to move forward we should consider these things, that you should let presidential candidates stay in for some time as other parties are doing. We could learn from them. (After) two to three times he (the presidential candidate) has become known, he has learnt the ropes.”
The dermatologist and three-time chairman of the Nkrumahist party said it was imperative that the party learnt from its mistakes, as failure to stick to one candidate for long had had “some side effects” on the success of the party.
He promised to give the CPP a stable front to break clean from the past of fleeting flagbearers.
He vowed to bring about peace and progress to arrest the CPP’s flagging electoral fortunes. This he said he would achieve by bringing all who have left the party back on board. He revealed that he would go on a “house-to-house” visit to such party members to ask for their return to the fold, a campaign he has christened “homecoming”.
