New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth groups within the Bawku Municipality are rooting for Umar Urstarz, the son of the renowned Urtarz Mallam Sofo, a spiritual leader of the UP tradition in Bawku and a blood brother to Sheihk Shamuna, the Islamic cleric that worked and predicted the NPP’s electoral victory in the last polls as the next Municipal Chief Executive (MCE)

Mallam Umar as affectionately called is currently the Chairman of the Finance Committee for the NPP in the Bawku Central Constituency and has previously coordinated and financed Hon Adamu Dramani Sakande’s election and that of the party in 2008, 2012 and 2016

The New Patriotic Party in the Upper East Region has settled on three persons as the final shortlisted applicants for the position of the Bawku Municipal Chief Executive.

This was after an initial list of 12 persons were received from the Bawku Central Constituency and pruned to the three by the Regional Executive Committee in Bolgatanga.

The list included the assembly man for North Natinga, Iddrisu Abubakar, Mogtar Amadu, a former employee of the National Service Secretariat and Umar Jebreel Ustarz an accountant with the NHIA, and respected Islamic cleric in the municipality.

On the streets of Bawku, two of the three, Umar Jebrel Ustarz and Mortar Amadu are highly preferred as the next MCE for their involvement in the activities of the party and philanthropic gestures, especially towards youth in the Municipality.

Majority of the people we interviewed are rooting for Umar Ustarz due to the influence he commands from the Chiefs and elders, constituency and regional officers.

Residents of the municipality optimistic that his leadership will not only usher more development, but will unite the party base as well as consolidate the peace they enjoy.
