President doesn’t need clearance from Savelugu youth to choose MCE - Minister

Martin Agyei-Mensah Korsah, Deputy Minister of Regional Reorganisation and Development has hit back at aggrieved New Patriotic Party (NPP) youth in the Savelugu-Nanton Municipality of the Northern Region, over calls for the president to immediately revoke the appointment of Hajia Ayishetu Seidu less than a month in office.

The aggrieved youth as well as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the area are accusing the embattled Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of being an alien on the basis that she is not known in the area and has never contributed to the political fortunes of the party.

According to them, her nomination and subsequent confirmation is a betrayal by the president who promised he was going to give priority to loyalty in the party and failed to consult them before she was chosen.

To this end, they have vowed to stop her from performing her mandated duties until her appointment is revoked for someone who is known to have worked for the party in the constituency to be replaced.

But the former Director of Elections of the party on Accra-based Okay Fm said the entrenched position of the party’s youth is floored.

“The president does not need their clearance to determine who the MCE for the area becomes. He has the constitutional right to determine who best fit for the job and no one must argue with him. What I think should be done is that the security agencies must rise up and arrest anyone who is seen obstructing the MCE from performing her official duties. We are a country governed by laws and the laws should not be working on political lines”, he stated.

He indicated that there is an urgent need for party supporters to be well educated on some of these practices the law frowns on.

“It is normal for people who work for the party but feel let down to be aggrieved but is within the purview of the president to determine who to choose as MCE or otherwise without clearance from them. If they are indeed NPP members then it is not good for the image of the party. The president does not need the clearance of Savelugu youth to appoint MCE for the area. If the person is not qualified the point is to stop him/her during the confirmation. They had every right to campaign against her prior to the confirmation”, he asserted.
