Deputy Ghana Ambassador to China, Dr. Charles Dwamena, aka Dr. China, who declared his intent to contest for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Treasurer position has withdrawn from the race.
It is not clear what informed the young doctor’s decision to pull out from the race.
“I have had one of the most pleasant surprises in my political carrier from the rank and file of the great Elephant family since I declared my intention to contest for the National Treasurer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). The overwhelming support I have received from across the nation for this ambition has been very motivating. While I cease this unique opportunity to express my profound gratitude to the members of our party, I wish to inform my supporters that I am unable to continue with this contest all in the interest of NPP”, a letter dated May 9, 2018, signed by the Campaign Team Spokesperson for Dr. Dwamena, Samauel Dakwa Binfoh and addressed to his teaming supporters and delegates of the NPP announcing his withdrawal from the race in part read.
Dr. China who has won the hearts of majority of the delegates was highly tipped to win the contest barring any last minute change.
Last month, a poll conducted by Ashpoll Consult declared the National Treasurer position as a one-man show, putting Dr. China far ahead of his competitors.
According to the polls, Dr. China polled 2,263 votes, representing 61.01% ahead of his competitors, Kwabena Abankwa-Yeboah, the incumbent; Nuhu Mahama, Ahmed Saida Ruka, Abraham Amoakohene and Mary Posch-Oduro, who polled 605, 361, 272, 123, and 85, representing 16.31%, 9.73%, 7.35%, 3.32% and 2.28%, respectively.
Below is the full statement of Dr. Dwamena announcing his withdrawal from the NPP National Treasurer race.
I have had one of the most pleasant surprises in my political carrier from the rank and file of the great Elephant family since I declared my intention to contest for the National Treasurer position of the New Patriotic Party (NPP). I am still of the firm belief that Ghana’s development can only be realized under an NPP Government and for that to happen we need to remain in power for more than 4 continuous terms. This, therefore, calls for the need to build a strong and resourceful party that will be capable of sustaining political power for long and I believe this could be achieved through the “4-Pillar Vision” upon which I campaigned:
1. Creation of A Welfare Fund. (A Welfare Fund to attend to the urgent needs of Constituency and Polling station executives as well as committed members of the party)
2. Establishment of Business Incubation Fund. (To provide technical and financial support to party members to start their own businesses or expand existing ones)
3. Embarking on Human Resource Empowerment Program. (giving scholarships to TESCON members, Youth within the party and relatives of active party members)
4. Administrative and Operational Budget. (monthly budgetary allocations to all constituencies, wings, directorates and external branches to run party activities)
These among others were my sources of motivation to lay down my role as Ghana’s Deputy Ambassador to China to come and help build a highly resourceful party and I pledge my commitment to contribute effectively to the building of a great party.
I am grateful to the leadership of the Party especially the National, Regional and Constituency executive members who received us and assisted us on our campaign tour.
I wish to finally use this opportunity to thank all the members of my Campaign Team, who sacrificed and put in lots of working hours to mount a very decent and issue-based campaign in these past few months. To our teaming supporters, I thank them for the overwhelming endorsement and mass acceptance of the 4-point vision which I hope would be adopted by the party in the very near future.
I have no doubt that the NPP government under H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will provide the needed leadership for the prosperity of Ghana. Consequently, we must all endeavour to do everything in our power to ensure that we build a highly resourceful party to compliment the efforts of our President.
Long live NPP
Long live Ghana
God bless us all
