Mampong (Ash), Oct 7, GNA - Political parties have been asked to re-package their campaign messages to meet the aspirations of the people and move away from the past politics of insults.
Mr Kusi Aborah, Ashanti Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), who gave this advice, said campaign messages that addressed national issues should appeal to the electorate than insults.
He said for instance that it was a matter of regret for politicians to insult one another on radio programmes, pointing out that such behaviour impacted negatively on the youth and undermined the country's infant democracy.
Mr Aborah was addressing political parties and other social groups in the Sekyere West District at a day's meeting on the Code of Conduct towards peaceful elections at Mampong on Tuesday.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP), National Democratic Congress (NDC), Convention People's Party (CPP) and People's National Convention (PNC) representatives and the parliamentary candidates, assembly members, religious bodies and artisans attended the meeting.
Mr Aborah implored politicians to appreciate the efforts of other parties towards nation building when they came to power before identifying the mistakes they made.
Such attitude, he pointed out, forestalled acrimony and aided peace, love and stability, to which the country was committed to pursue. The Regional NCCE Director said the decision to join a particular political party was the choice of the individual and it was, therefore, unacceptable for anyone or group of people to heckle someone for his choice of a party.
Mr Aborah asked the youth not to jeopardise their future through political violence, pointing out to them: "You can never break the law but you can only break yourself against the law."
He asked the political leaders to be conversant with the code of conduct for the political parties, educate their members on it and apply themselves strictly to it.
Mr Robert Ben Forkuoh, District Director of the NCCE, urged the parties and Ghanaians to accept the result of the December polls. Mr Thomas Edward Atakorah, District Chief Executive, said the coming elections was divinely controlled and, therefore, urged Ghanaians to hold their peace and look forward to successful elections.
