Lydia Seyram Alhassan, a widow of the late Ayawaso West Wuogon MP, Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko, has been elected by the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the parliamentary candidate for the forthcoming 31 January 2019 by-poll.

Ms Alhassan was among six aspirants who were given the go-ahead by the party to run for the primary.

However, Rev. Edward Agyekum Kufuor, son of former president John Agyekum Kufuor, dropped out of the race out of respect for the late MP.

The other four aspirants included Victoria Esinam Ansah Offei, an Assembly Member for Legon Electoral Area; Samuel Amankwah, a former Constituency Youth Organiser; Yaa Gyamera Aboagye and Ato Williams.

After Saturday's primary conducted by the Electoral Commission, the votes polled by the aspirants are as follow:

Yaa Gyamera Aboagye – 76

Ato Williams – 131

Victoria Esinam Ansah Offei – 1

Samuel Owusu Amankwah – 19

Lydia Seyram Alhassan – 441

There were 668 valid votes and two rejected ballots. In all, a total of 670 votes were cast.

Ms Alhassan will battle it out with the opposition National Democratic Congress’ Delali Brempong, who was elected a day before.

Mr Agyarko died on 21 November this year and will be on 26 January 2019 at his hometown Odumase-Krobo.
