Bolgatanga, Dec. 30, GNA - The Upper East Region branch of the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) Youth Wing on Wednesday, warned that it would not countenance any attempt by Madam Hawa Yakubu to heighten unnecessary tension in the already volatile situation in the Bawku Central Constituency, where she lost in the recent parliamentary election.
The youth contended that, Madam Hawa's defeat was a genuine one, which was widely expected because the electorate had lost faith in her, due to her dubious and subversive behaviour towards her constituents. The Regional Youth Organiser, Mr Mahommed Tahiru Nambe made the call at a press conference held by the Regional Executive of the Youth Wing in Bolgatanga.
According to Mr Mambe, the Youth Wing "wishes to set the records straight and to let Ghanaians know the truth about the poor performance of the party in the region and especially, the loss of the Bawku Central seat to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) even though that seat is traditionally a United Party (UP) seat.
Mr Nambe attributed the defeat of Madam Hawa to a long-standing vengeance the people of Bawku had been waiting for, after the 2000 election until they showed it up in the December 7, 2004 polls.
Mr Nambe explained that, Madam Hawa failed in her capacity as the then Member of Parliament (MP)-elect in 2000 to visit victims of the clashes where about 46 people lost their lives, while many others were injured as a result of differences between supporters of Hawa and NDC functionaries.
He said by her own actions, Madam Hawa had lost her popularity, because "she had lost her sense of humility as well as the distinctive northern discipline, and must therefore pay a prize for her own actions."
The Regional Youth Organiser, who was flanked by other members of the executive, challenged Madam Hawa to prove beyond all doubt, how true her allegations of an attempted assassination on her at her Bolgatanga residence and the allegation of a contract awarded to one Imoranna Layeh through the influence of the Vice President, Alhaji Aliu Mahama as she claimed in her press conference in Accra.
Mr Nambe explained that, her alleged missing money was a payback for the harsh treatment she meted out to some of her aides and staff, which is her usual behaviour.
He questioned the whereabouts of her Nigerian aide, one Enoh, who lived with her in her apartment at the residency until the eve of the December 7 election and suggested that all evidence points to the girl as the likely person who might have bolted with the money for payback.
The Youth Organiser said the youth wing has observed the Vice President since 2000 and found him to be a selfless and humble man, who is working tirelessly to build a good image for the party and to win over more people, especially from northern Ghana and other Islamic communities nationwide.
Mr Nambe said if there were dubious political advances made by anybody at all, Madam Hawa should be held responsible, "because against all ethical values of the party, she distributed sewing machines, motorcycles, clothes, foodstuff and money, which further provoked the resistance as most people felt insulted that she felt they could be bought."
The Youth Wing further accused Madam Hawa of rather spearheading the disintegration of the party through her support for some independent candidates against NPP candidates in the region.
They mentioned Madam Hawa's sponsorship package for Mr Abdallah Achuluwor, an independent candidate in the Navrongo Central Constituency, her support for Mr Basko Kante against Mr Theodore Ayarik, in the Builsa South constituency and another independent candidate in the Binduri constituency.
Mr Nambe said, "we have observed that Madam Hawa is deliberately driving a wedge into our party for a selfish motive, which we understand but readily dismiss with the contempt it deserves, because her bid to destabilise the party in the north will fail as long as the north is concerned."
He said the youth would continue to express their unflinching support to the President John Agyekum Kufour, Vice President Aliu Mahama and the party as a whole and called on the leadership of the party to act swiftly in calling Madam Hawa to order to preserve the good name, unity and cohesion of the party.
Mr Nambe said, "lessons in the past have taught us that she must be kept in check, because the fragile peace, unity and well-being of the people of Bawku cannot be toyed with to satisfy an individual's misplaced ego. If she has lost, it is a genuine defeat and it is important Hawa rather leads the party to reconcile and look forward for a future victory."
