A National Nasara candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and a party financier, Alhaji Ahmed Zarruk Nuhu has lauded the President, H. E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for fulfilling his promise to the bereaved families of the Asawase Zongo tragedy in Kumasi.
Alhaji Ahmed Zarruk, who is also an active member of the NPP also commended the Zongo Development Minister, Dr Mustapha Hamid and his ministry for honoring their words to the bereaved families.
It would be recalled that on July 7, 2018, Police in the Ashanti Region shot and killed seven persons believed to be armed robbers at Manso Nkwanta.
The seven, all residents of Asawase Zongo in Kumasi, were said to have exchanged fire with the police patrol team.
The killings however sparked outrage in Zongo communities in Kumasi with residents insisting on the innocence of the seven victims.
Meanwhile, a seven-member committee which was set up to investigate the shootings concluded that there was no evidence to suggest that the seven persons who were killed in the shootout were armed robbers.
The President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo announced a compensation package to be paid to the families of the victims of the Asawase shooting incident; a promise he kept to the admiration of all.
According to Ahmed Zarruk Nuhu, this is the first time in the history of this country that a sitting president had fulfilled such a major promise to the people of the Muslim community.
He said even though money cannot replace the life of a human being let alone the lives of the seven people killed, the President has shown commitment to the welfare and feels the pains the families are enduring.
Each of the seven families of the deceased were paid GH¢250,000 as an appeasement as promised by President Akufo-Addo.
The separate cheques were presented to the families by the Minister of Inner-city and Zongo Development, Dr Mustapha Abdul-Hamid.
Ahmed Zarruk Nuhu said the bereaved families and Muslims in their entirety have recognized the roles the President is playing to ensure a major transformation in their livelihoods.
He said President Akufo-Addo must be commended by all for the gesture he made towards the bereaved families.
