National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, has accused some officials of the Akufo-Addo led government of taking bribes to support illegal mining.
According to him, presidential staffers and other people have” institutionalized ‘galamsey” at the Jubilee House, making the President’s much-touted fight against the illegal activity a charade.
The government set up the Operation Vanguard to combat illegal small-scale mining also known as galamsey in the country in 2017.
“Some Akufo- Addo appointees are taking bribes to allow ‘Galamsey’ to go on in the mining areas, but the President is adamant in trying to prosecute them,” Sammy Gyamfi exclusively told Kwame Tutu on Anopa Nkomo on Accra based Kingdom FM 107.7.
“This is the time for President Akufo-Addo to rise above his sweet but hollow rhetoric and start to walk the talk. He must show genuine commitment and dedication to the fight against illegal mining,’ he added.
In an explosive documentary, investigative journalist, Anas Aremeyaw revealed that government officials are circumventing measures to curb illegal mining and allowing a company to mine.
The undercover work showed the officials receiving various sums of money to facilitate the process and provide security protection for the mining company.
Sammy Gyamfi was also worried some officials caught on tape taking bribes in the documentary seem to have been left off the hook.
