Pra-River (Ash), May 9, GNA - Mr J.A. Asihene, Deputy Co-ordinating Director for the Asante-Akim South district, has called on Ghanaians to be active participants in the local government system in order to make Ghana's young democracy thrive.
He held that reducing poverty through citizens participation in local governance could only be achieved when the people understood their civic rights and responsibilities.
Mr Asihene, who was launching the fifth constitutional week celebration at Pra-River in the Asante-Akim South district, was of the view that if the citizens were better informed of their civic responsibilities, they would not question the payment of taxes but would support the district assemblies to generate revenue to improve their lot.
Mr Bernard Owusu-Ansah, District Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), urged the people study the 1992 constitution to enable them to defend it at all times against abuses and violations.
