Sekondi, June 5, GNA - Mr Peter Mac Manu, Western Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), on Thursday called on the people to rally behind the Party to consolidate the gains of the government. He made the call at the second regional executive committee meeting of the NPP at Sekondi.
Mr Manu said the Party has made considerable economic gains unequalled by any other government in the past.
He said charges of corruption and mismanagement being made against the government by the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the Committee for Joint Action were lies and misinformation. Mr Manu said the NDC was discrediting the government out of envy because it was unable to bring the same level of development to the country during its tenure of office.
He urged members and supporters of the NPP to unite and rally behind the government to build a strong party and bring more development to the country.
Mr Joe Ghartey, Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice and Member of Parliament for Essikado, said the government was serious about the fight against corruption.
"Corruption is being fought legally and the legal framework for fighting it is on course," Mr Ghartey said and asked the public to be watchdogs against corruption and waste of state resources. He said agencies charged with investigating corruption have been strengthened to ensure that people do not get away with wrongly acquired wealth.
Mr Joseph Boahen Aidoo, Western Regional Minister, said various mechanisms have been put in place to check corruption but so far, no member of the government had been caught in the net. Mr Aidoo said the government was focused on developing the country, despite the attempts to make it unpopular and asked members of the Party not to be disheartened by allegations of corruption against the President.
Mr Lord Commey, National Organiser of NPP, appealed to the media to investigate issues thoroughly and to tell the truth. He said the NDC wants to throw the country into confusion and to take the country back to "the dark days of the June 4 Uprising".
