The leadership of the Patriotic Youth Alliance (PYA) has warned that the ruling New Patriotic Party will start crumbling if the National Executive Council (NEC) of the Party settles on foisting unopposed candidates on them in the party primaries.
The last National Steering Committee meeting of the party held on April 14, 2020, saw the party suspending its primaries till further notice in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the restrictions imposed by the President pursuant to EI 64.
The party has, till date, not met at any level, to review this position following the President’s decision to lift the partial lockdown imposed on some major cities in the country.
But speculations are rife that the National Executive Committee(NEC) is likely to arrange for unopposed candidates to be fielded instead of opening the contest.
The group in an interview on Kasapa has asked the party hierarchy to consider the suspended primaries in the coming month, May 2020 based on polling station level in each constituency.
“I don’t think we would be overwhelmed by numbers If we say we want to hold the Parliamentary and Presidential Primaries on polling station level across-board. Look, this can even help in practicing social distancing in that exercise. We can do it. But if the Party leadership dares to impose any person on us, there will be divisions in the party,” Convener of the aligned NPP group, Thomas Boakye told host Kweku Owusu Adjei on Anopa Kasapa on Kasapa 102.5 FM.
