Deputy Attorney General Joseph Dindiok Kpemka has assured Ghanaians that Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu will be prosecuting a backlog of cases this year following a five-two majority decision of Ghana’s Supreme Court which declared as lawful, the former Attorney General’s appointment by President Nana Akufo-Addo as the country’s first-ever Special Prosecutor.
According to the Deputy Minister of Justice, the Special Prosecutor had difficulties in executing his mandate effectively owing to the lawsuit filed against him by former Deputy Attorney General Dr. Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, who challenged Mr Amidu’s appointment due to his age at the time he was given the job.
Mr. Kpemka told Blessed Sogah on Class91.3FM’s State of the Nation programme on Wednesday, 13 May 2020 that President Akufo-Addo “never ever made a mistake when he appointed [Martin Amidu]”.
“This is a man [Amidu] with the incorruptible track record. This is a man with a very solid public record in fighting graft. And this is a man ready and prepared to fight to protect the public purse”, he said.
Mr Kpemka further explained that “now that he is free to act, I can assure you that; yes – I don’t speak for him – but I can assure you that in the coming days, he will be acting”, adding: “There’s no doubt about that”.
Mr Kpemka also asked Ghanaians to be patient, as he is hopeful and confident that Mr Amidu, by the end of December, would have made some progress.
