Akyem Gyadam July 29, GNA - A 100,000 Euro water projects at Akyem Gyadam, in the Birim, Central Municipality has been inaugurated with an appeal to the people to desist from practices that pollute the environment and affect their health.
Ms Ophelia Koomson, Birim Central Municipal Chief Executive, who performed the inauguration, also advised the people to guard against indiscriminate dumping of refuse, especially plastic bags, to save the environment "and our very dear lives."
The project financiers include the Flemish, community of Belgium and TMVW International of Belgium, which contributed 80, 000 Euros towards the project.
The partners, including International Centre for Enterprise and Sustainable Development (ICED), Fund for Development Cooperation (FOS, Viye University of Brussels (VUS) and the Gyadam Community contributed 20,000 Euros.
Ms Koomson observed that the volume of surface water bodies as at independence had decreased tremendously as compared to "what we see these days."
"If care is not taken; a time would come when the country would be importing water for both domestic and industrial use," she warned.
She, therefore, advised all and sundry to protect and preserve water bodies.
Ms Koomson urged the chiefs and people of Gyadam to take proper care of the facility by establishing a sustainable operation and maintenance culture in order to prolong its life span.
The MCE indicated that the government's policy of a "Better Ghana Agenda" was yielding much fruits in all areas such as Education, Infrastructure and Employment, and entreated all to work to support it since the municipality had already started enjoying its fair share.
She advised all to avoid the usual Ghanaian Pull Him Down (PHD) syndrome attitudes and rather support the government to execute all the development programmes it had embarked upon to solve the numerous problems, which confront the nation.
Ms Koomson commended Mr William Agyapong Quaitoo, the assembly member for the area, who is also the Presiding member of the Birim Central Municipal Assembly, and the local unit committee, for sustaining the communal spirit.
She also expressed her gratitude to the donor partners for extending help to the Birim Central Municipality in general, and Gyadam, in particular.
Mr Quaitoo, on his part, called for unity among the people at all times to help promote development.
Professor Dr Emmanuel K. Boon, Chairman of ICED, expressed his disappointment at the youth of the town for showing lukewarm attitude towards communal labour on the project.
He advised them to change for the better saying that, "the progress of the town depended to a large extend on them."
Professor Boon, on behalf of the ICED, donated a cheque for GHC 1,000.00 as their contribution towards rehabilitating rainstorm disaster victims in the town.
