About 1,359 food vendors in the Tema Metropolis have undergone medical screening from January to March this year.

Out of the total number, 1,065 were newly registered and awarded medical certificates while 294 of vendors renewed their medical certificates.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Metro Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Edward Kwabla Shardey, said the screening is part of procedures to legitimatize their businesses, adding that, the target for the first quarter, which is 1,200, was exceeded.

The Metro Environmental Health Officer said 2,639 animals were inspected at the slaughter house, out of which 2,373 were cattle, 264 goats and two pigs.

He said out of the total number, 100 animals had pathological conditions like liver flukes, hepatitis, nephrosis among others, and two were destroyed because they were unwholesome for public consumption.

According to him, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly organised four durbars in various communities to listen to the complaints of residents in its bid to promote hygienic practices within the Assembly.

He said during the durbars, topical issues like noise nuisance by churches and bars, food vendors selling by drains and indiscriminate dumping of refuse among others were raised.

Mr. Shardey said to avoid these problems, monitoring and supervision would be intensified while bye-laws would be enforced.
