A renewed land dispute between the people of Doba and Kandiga in the Kassena-Nanakana West District of the Upper East region has resulted in the death of six people.

Twelve houses were also set ablaze during the clash and two people are receiving treatment at the War Memorial Hospital after sustaining various degrees of injury during the clash.

“There was a clash between the people of Doba and Kandiga. We have lost six lives and among even those killed is an old man who is over 100 years. They set about 12 houses ablaze and two people were seriously injured. They sustained gunshot wounds and have been rushed to the War Memorial Hospital and we are praying that they survive,” the Navrongo Municipal Police Commander, Superintendent Francis Agyare, stated in a Citi News report.

He further revealed that a joint military-police team have been deployed to the communities to maintain law and order whilst the police continues its investigations.

According to the police, some individuals from Kandiga who had been arrested over a previous disturbance in the area were granted bail by the Bolgatanga high court.

The suspects were celebrated as heroes upon their return home and this didn’t go down well with the people of Doba, resulting in the reprisal attack.

Supt. Agyare noted that the conflict has gotten so bad that people of Kandiga are killing their own, believed to be supporting the people of Doba.

Some residents have been forced to seek refuge in neighbouring communities.

The Navrongo Municipal Security Committee is expected to hold an emergency security meeting later Sunday, July 5, 2020, to decide the fate of the two communities.
