2 killed on Kumasi road

Two People, a male and female, were killed and 22 others injured as a speeding Sprinter Benz bus plunged into a roadside ditch at New Koforidua on the Accra-Kumasi highway in the Ashanti region on Friday.

The Kumasi-bound bus with registration number AS 2766-13 from Accra tumbled into a ditch at the community near Konongo at about 3:00pm after bursting one of its rear tyres, thereby killing two passengers onboard, with one dying on the spot.

DSP Augustine Mensah, the Konongo Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) commander, who confirmed the incident, told DAILY GUIDE the dead were yet to be identified.

According to him, the injured persons were admitted to the Konongo Government Hospital, but those in critical condition were later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment.

An eyewitness, Francis Boglo narrated that evacuating the injured persons from the scene of the accident to the hospital for treatment took time, as there was no car to convey them.

He expressed shock at the accident, asserting that the Sprinter bus driver was running the vehicle at top speed before one of its tyres burst.

Mr. Boglo said the driver of the ill-fated bus lost control of the vehicle following which it ran into a roadside ditch.
