In two years, the Akuapem Odwira Festival will celebrate its 200th anniversary, marking two centuries since Nana Addo Dankwa I first commemorated it in 1826, following the historic Katamanso War of 1824 (also known as the Battle of Dodowa).
During this significant war, the Akuapems captured the Odwira deity (Odosu) and other sacred regalia, which have since become central to the festival's celebration.
Over the years, Akuapem Odwira has evolved into a monumental and widely respected festival, renowned not only in Ghana but also internationally. Its deep cultural significance and rich history continue to attract a broad audience, making it one of the most celebrated festivals in the country.
This year’s festival, celebrated from October 7-18, 2024, was no exception. Held under the theme "Sustainable Development through the Patronage of Eco-Tourism and Environmental Health," it blended tradition, health initiatives, and environmental awareness.
The theme reflects Okuapehene- Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III's vision of leveraging the tourism potential of Okuapeman while ensuring the sustainable use of natural resources to drive economic development.
Since his enstoolment in 2020, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III has been a strong advocate for eco-tourism. Through various initiatives, including environmental conservation efforts, over 5,000 trees have been planted across Okuapeman.
Additionally, he has introduced measures to protect the region's natural resources, underscoring his commitment to sustainable development.
One such initiative is the ongoing dialogue to establish an Okuapeman Customary Land Secretariat, aimed at harmonizing the administration and management of stool and family lands within the Akuapem Traditional Area.
SUSTAINABILITY AND ECO-TOURISM AT THE CORE
As part of the festival, experts and stakeholders in tourism and environmental management convened for a Public Lecture and Symposium to discuss how eco-tourism can drive economic growth while preserving the environment.
The discussions focused on innovative strategies to protect the region’s natural beauty and heritage while boosting local economies through sustainable tourism practices.
In line with this vision, a series of tree-planting exercises were conducted across Akuapem, symbolizing the community's commitment to safeguarding the environment for future generations.
Participants, including students and local organizations, took part in this eco-conscious initiative, which aligns with the long-term goal of promoting eco-tourism in the region.
LIFE-CHANGING HEALTH INTERVENTIONS THROUGH THE OSEADEEYO KWASI AKUFFO FOUNDATION (OKWAF) The 2024 Odwira Festival was not only a celebration of culture and tradition but also a powerful platform for social impact, thanks to the Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo Foundation (OKWAF).
This year’s festival showcased the foundation’s unwavering commitment to community development, focusing on healthcare and education in partnership with the Save Africa Foundation (SAF) and Trans Sahara Industries.
Two major initiatives—the Free Surgeries and Health Screenings Program and the Bicycle for Education and Growth Initiative—exemplified OKWAF’s dedication to improving lives and creating opportunities for Okuapeman and beyond. These initiatives provided life-saving surgeries and health screenings to hundreds of community members who often lack access to quality healthcare.
The screenings included blood pressure checks, diabetes screenings, eye exams, and consultations with medical professionals from the USA and Ghana, helping to detect health issues early and improve outcomes. In addition, the program offered free surgeries for complex health conditions such as hernias, uterine myoma, and breast lumps.
These interventions significantly improved the quality of life for patients and their families. At the same time, OKWAF launched the "Bicycle for Education and Growth Initiative," a partnership with Trans Sahara Industries to provide bicycles to students in rural areas, addressing the challenge of long distances to schools.
This initiative aimed to enhance students' academic performance by reducing travel time, fatigue, and tardiness. During the festival, dozens of students received new bicycles, bringing joy to their families. OKWAF’s commitment to education is grounded in the belief that empowering the youth through education can transform lives. By focusing on both healthcare and education, the foundation demonstrated a holistic approach to community development.
Looking ahead to a sustainable future
The 2024 Akuapem Odwira Festival was not just a celebration of tradition but also a forward-thinking event focused on sustainability and community development.
The blend of cultural festivities, eco-tourism promotion, and health interventions created a lasting impact on the people of Okuapeman.
In his closing remarks, Oseadeeyo Kwasi Akuffo III, Okuapehene, addressed the critical issue of illegal mining, commonly known as “Galamsey,” and its devastating effects on the environment.
“This practice has not only polluted our water bodies but has also led to the degradation of our precious forests. The consequences are dire, affecting not just our natural resources but also the health and livelihood of our people. It is imperative that we take a firm stand and call for a complete ban on these activities. Protecting our environment is essential for the sustainable development of our community.”
In conclusion, he expressed his deepest gratitude to everyone for their dedication to the community and environment.
“Let us carry the spirit of Odwira in our hearts, fostering a commitment to sustainable development. Together, we can ensure that our heritage and our environment thrive for generations to come.”
