250 million cedis school block inaugurated

Mpraeso (E/R), April 14, GNA- Two school blocks costing 250 million cedis for the Nana Wiafe Methodist Vocational Institute had been inaugurated at Mpraeso in the Kwahu South district on Monday.

The project was financed by Stitching Empower, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in the Netherlands through the initiative of Mr Mike Akyeampong, a former Deputy Minister for Agriculture in the previous government.

The NGO also presented three computers and accessories, five typewriters, sewing machines, a gas cooker, bed sheets, footballs and trophies worth millions of cedis to the institute.

The District Chief Executive, Mr Raymond Osafo Djan said vocational institutions play a major role in the country's socio-economic development that was why a large number of the nation's youth were being given skill training at the country's vocational institutions under the Skill Training for Employable Skills Programme (STEP).

He urged parents to give their children vocational education to enable them to establish their own businesses to enhance their living standards.

The DCE announced that the District Assembly would assist the Institute with five million cedis to construct a place of convenience and would continue to offer further assistance to enhance their performance.

Chairperson of the NGO, Ms Georgina Rullmann Schmidt, commended Mr Akyeampong, the chief of Mpraeso and the community for their co-operation and assistance for the successful completion of the project.

She said the project would not benefit the students and the community alone but the entire nation where trained students would put the modern technology acquired at the institute to serve the entire country.

She urged the institute and the community to put the project to good use by offering the block for social gathering to raise funds for its regular maintenance so that the younger generation would also benefit.

The Principal of the Institute, Mr Joshua Boye Dartey said the institute needed a place of convenience, furniture, gas cylinders and stoves, water containers and electricity and appealed to the District Assembly, NGOs, individuals, and the Rotary Club for assistance.

The Principal said the institute had 100 per cent pass with 13 distinctions in last year's National Vocational Institute (NVTI) final examination.
