Four people have been killed in Dambai in the Volta Region following clashes between Konkombas and Battors. One person is still in coma at the Hohoe government hospital. The corpses of the deceased, Santo Kabassah, Kabana Ahiaku, Gbese Voegborlo and the fourth, who was only identified as Agama, were deposited at the morgue of the police hospital in Accra last Friday.
The name of the person in coma was given as Doe Geraldo, while another person, Mawutor, was treated and discharged. Several persons have so far been arrested to assist in investigations, while seven locally-manufactured, single-barrelled guns, two bows and arrows and two knives have been retrieved by the police.
The commissioner of Police in charge of operations, Dr. K.K. Manfo who confirmed this in an interview said reports indicated that July 11, 2004, a Konkonba man allegedly prepared his land for cultivation. He said the cattle of a Battor man allegedly herded through the land and that infuriated the Konkomba man.
According to him, the Konkomba man informed these colleagues and after mobilizing many people, they attacked the family of the cattle owner, resulting in serious injuries to Doe Geraldo and Mawutor Geraldo. He said the aggrieved family informed their kith and kin and while they were also mobilizing to retaliate, the Konkombas resurfaced to launch another attack on July 13, 2004, resulting in the death of the four persons. He said the police dispatched to the scene to control the situation.
