Forty personnel of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) of the Ghana Police Service have been airlifted from Accra to Tamale to ensure security in the Northern Region capital.

This follows Tuesday’s disturbances, which led to the torching of cars on the premises of Radio Justice and Bayport Financial Services in the Region.

Speaking on TV3’s News@10 on Wednesday, March 12, Chief Superintendent Hamza Yakubu, the Commander of the Formed Police Unit, said the deployed personnel are well-trained and adequately armed to ensure the safety of citizens in Tamale.

He said the Police Service is acting swiftly because of the threat issued by a section of the youth that they will “make the place ungovernable”.

“That is why we have to beef up security here,” he stated, adding that together with about 30 personnel from the Brong Ahafo Region, they will be in Tamale until total calm is restored.

Already, a joint police and military personnel has mounted a 24-hour surveillance in the city.

“As a service we will not allow complacency to be part of our plan,” Chief Superintendent Yakubu stated.

Meanwhile, 108 persons were arrested on Wednesday. However, they have all been released upon the directive of the regional command.

The arrests were made in connection with the disturbances.
