Accra, 15 Dec. GNA - Mr John Yaw Opoku, a Legal Practitioner has asked women to give meaning to the Domestic Violence Act and not to hesitate to report whenever they were abused or their rights trampled upon. He said the law was passed to end any violence they might have been suffering from their men counterparts and to preserve their inherent human rights.
Mr Opoku was speaking on the Domestic Violence Law at the 12th graduation ceremony of during which 500 women passed out with Diplomas in Dressmaking, Secretaryship and Home Management at the Young Christian Women's Association (YWCA) in Accra. He said; "Men usually respect women who work hard to make ends meet for themselves." Mr Opoku advised schools to, once in a while, invite women achievers to talk to the students to encourage them to give of their best.
He called for the establishment a Legal Aid Unit where women who were faced with legal issues could be counselled and helped. In a speech read on his behalf, Mr. Kweku Ofori-Duro, Principal of the Secretarial Department of the School said in line with the Government's vision of making technical and vocational education the bedrock of the nation's development, YWCA had introduced Information and Communication Technology, Mathematics and English Language in its curriculum.
Mr Ofori-Duro extended his appreciation to the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) for its assistance to the School and urged it to do more since the well-being of the School largely depended on them. Mrs. Mary Quaye, who was the Chairperson and also the Deputy Regional Director of the Ghana Education Service advised the school to liaise with the Polytechnics so that they could introduce some programmes in the school. The ceremony was under the theme: "Ghana @ 50, the Role of the YWCA in Youth Development".
Awards were presented to graduates who excelled in their various field of study with Ms Mary Kosipa being adjudged the Overall Best Student in Dressmaking, while Ms. Natalena Quao was also awarded the Best Overall Student in Home Management and Helen Impraim received the Most Well Behaved Student award. 15 Dec. 07
