Wa, July 1, GNA - The government has within the last three years, constructed 57 three-unit classroom blocks in the Wa District at a total
cost of about 14.5 billion cedis from the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND) and support from its development partners. The number of new school blocks in the District is expected to increase to 65 by the end of the year, with the completion of eight more school projects which were under construction, Mr Godfred Bayon Tangu, Wa District Chief Executive (DCE) said.
He was addressing the ninth Teachers Award ceremony of the district at Wa on Wednesday.
Eight teachers in the Primary, Junior secondary School and Technical/Vocational School categories and two non-teaching staff of the Ghana Education Service in the district, had awards. Each of them received one packet of roofing sheets and boxes of roofing nails at the ceremony, which was sponsored by the Municipal Assembly.
Mr Tangu noted that the level of development of educational infrastructure, including the provision of furniture was unprecedented in the history of the District.
He commended the Municipal Director of Education and her supporting staff for their hard work in propelling the district to the 15th position in last year's Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and placing first in the Region in spite of the district's deprived status.
The Municipal Chief Executive told the award winners to work harder to sustain the confidence and trust reposed in them to enable them to serve as role models to their peers.
He asked teachers to play a pivotal role in educating and sensitising their school communities on the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Mrs Schlastica Gyielle, the Municipal Director of Education called on the government to address the problem of residential accommodation facing teachers in rural areas in order to motivate them to accept posting to these areas and also minimise daily commuting to school by teachers.
She announced that 37 teachers who were posted to remote communities in the district, this year, have been provided with bicycles to pay half the cost in order to motivate them to give of their best.
