A teacher is among the suspects arrested for defiling schoolchildren in the Upper East Region, where six pupils were abused across three districts between July 2025 and March 2026.

An adomonline.com report published on May 25, 2026, cited cases recorded in Talensi District, Bawku Municipality, and Bolgatanga Municipality.

“If teachers, who are supposed to act as parents and protect these children, are rather the ones abusing them, then it means our children are not safe,” Upper East Regional Gender Desk Officer Rita Mbamah said.

Mbamah disclosed the data at a regional review meeting in Bolgatanga, expressing concern over teachers’ involvement in the abuse.

In Bolgatanga, a teacher has been arrested and granted bail in two of the cases; in Talensi, one suspect is in custody while another is on the run; in Bawku, authorities are still hunting a suspect linked to two cases.

The meeting, held by the Department of Gender with support from UNFPA, also revealed that 376 pregnant girls and lactating mothers sat the BECE and WASSCE in the region during the period.

This included 84 pregnant girls and 46 lactating mothers for the BECE, and 111 pregnant girls and 135 lactating mothers for the WASSCE.

Officials said many abuse cases stall before reaching court.

Sergeant Safia Salifu of DOVVSU said complainants often withdraw after pressure from relatives and community members to settle matters outside the justice system.

Assistant ADR Officer at the Legal Aid Commission, Farihan Mutaru, added that the lack of a resident lawyer and interference from families further weaken legal processes.

Acting Regional Director of the Department of Gender James Twene urged stronger stakeholder collaboration, noting quarterly reviews have improved support for survivors.

UNFPA Focal Person Yvonne Wonchua warned that poor data systems are hampering the response and making it harder to secure resources for victim protection and prevention efforts.
