62nd Independence Day celebrations marked in Jomoro

A total of 31 Basic and Second Cycle Schools in the Jomoro Municipality of the Western Region went on a March past to mark the 62nd Independence Anniversary Day celebrations at Half Assini Senior High School park.

Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Ernest Kofie flanked by the District Police Commander, DSP Zeprain Zenge and the Director of Education, Mr. George Effah took the salute from the parade commander and reviewed a colourful parade of the cadet corps of the various schools.

St. Andrew Methodist Primary School of Half Assini emerged first in the March past in the primary category with 78 marks.

Ekpu Roman Catholic primary school became second with 71 marks and Christ The King of Half Assini became third with 21 marks.

On the other hand, Nzemanle Junior High School of Half Assini scooped the first position in the JHS category with 77 marks.

Half Assini Roman Catholic JHS won the second position with 75 marks and Christ The King JHS became third with 73 points.

Maame Awuah Cobbina who completed Modern Educational Complex of Bonyere last year was adjudged the best female 2018 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidate with aggregate eight (8). She received a cash prize of GHC300 with a certificate. She is currently furthering her education at Ghana National SHS.

Oppong Bismark Adjei who also completed Elubo SDA JHS last with aggregate seven (7), was also adjudged the best male 2018 BECE candidate. He also received a cash prize of GHC300 with a certificate. He is currently schooling at GSTS.

Blay Esther and Kwamena Samuel who completed the Half Assini Senior High School last year were adjudged the best female and male 2018 WASCE candidates with aggregates thirteen (13) respectively. They received a cash prize of GHC500 each with a certificate each.

The 2018 best female Western Regional Athlete from the Jomoro Municipality who is a form two student Amokwawsuazo M/A JHS, Sarah Cobbinah received a cash prize of GHC300 from the Assembly.

Sarah Cobbinah made the Jomoro Municipality proud by winning 1500 and 3000 meters at the Regional level.

The Assembly also gave a cash prize of GHC300 to Abigail Ackah for winning a Long Jump competition in Koforidua in 2018 to become the best National female Athlete in the country.

Abigail Ackah is a form two student of Tikobo No. 2 Roman Catholic Junior High School in the Jomoro Municipality.

Addressing the parade, the MCE for the area, Hon. Ernest Kofie who read the President's speech, on the theme, "Celebrating Peace and Unity", said the theme was timely and relevant to us a nation.



"There would not be a better theme than this, especially when we pause to consider the several devastating conflicts and instabilities that have occurred in many countries in our Sub-region, and Africa as a whole", he stated.

He added "This theme reminds us of the fact that peace is the single most important factor that has sustained our progress as a nation since independence. Even though we have sometimes allowed trivial issues to divide us and undermine our co-existence. Peace is a delicate product. Communities and nations, which failed to realize this fact, have paid dearly for its absence".

The MCE said peace and unity do not fall like manna from heaven adding that it comes to those who plan, prepare and dedicate their time for it.

He, therefore, charged his people to continue to make conscious efforts to sustain the relative peace and stability they are enjoying now.

Hon. Ernest Kofie seized the opportunity to thank those who have worked hard to promote and preserve the peace and unity in the Municipality and Ghana as a whole.

He revealed that the Central Government and Municipality will continue to work for peace and security in their communities to enable children to realize their aspirations.

He said the Assembly received educational materials such as school uniforms, English dictionaries and boxes of chalk from the Central Government to be distributed to Basic Schools in the Municipality.

He called on the school children to be disciplined and also attend school regularly and take their studies seriously.

He also urged parents and teachers to demonstrate commitment and interest in the proper development of the children.

The 62nd Independence Anniversary Day celebrations held in the Jomoro Municipality was attended by Western Nzema Traditional Council President, Awulea Annor Adjaye III, the Chief of Half Assini, Nana Ayebie Ahmere, the Jomoro Municipal Coordinating Director, Jomoro Municipal Magistrate, the security agencies, religious leaders, teachers, workers of Zoomliion Ghana Limited, some Fitters, some traders, cooks of the SHSs in the area, the media among others.
