Agona Swedru (C/R), Oct. 10, GNA - About 75 per cent of public school teachers in Agona East District and Agona West Municipality of the Central Region are not computer literate. Mr Williams Yirenkyi, Executive Directive of Glorious Orphans and Vision Organisation (GLOVO), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), made this known at the launch of a "Come Back to School" project, embarked upon by the organisation at Agona Swedru. He said a survey conducted by the NGO showed that a large number of teachers at the basic schools have no computer skills, while there are few computers to facilitate the teaching of Information, Communication Technology (ICT).
Mr Yirenkyi said the project is aimed at ensuring that underprivileged children and school dropouts are enrolled in school. GLOVO used the occasion to present four computers and accessories and 60 pieces of school uniforms to pupils at Agona Duakwa Islamic Junior High School.
The NGO also presented 16 computers and accessories for distribution to some schools in the two areas. Mr Yirenkyi said the world is fast changing and teachers in public schools need to acquire computer skills so that they can impact ICT knowledge to the pupils, who are expected to take exams in ICT next academic year, as part of the Basic Education Certificate Examination. He said a team of volunteers from Germany and Britain have arrived in the country to teach ICT at selected basic schools in the Agona West. Mr Nelson Asamoah, Agona West District Deputy Director of Education in Charge of Finance and Administration, said the directorate would monitor the use of the computers and take punitive action against the schools that fails to use them.
