A boost for non-formal education

Bolgatanga, Sept 10, GNA - A solar lighting project to boost non-formal education in rural communities in the three Northern Regions has taken off.

The project, estimated to cost 400 million cedis, is part of a nation-wide initiative funded by the government. It is expected to benefit learners of Non-Formal Division (NFD) of the Ghana Education Service, school children and facilitate socio-economic development.

The Upper East Regional Minister, Mr Mahami Salifu, said the project would reduce the level of ignorance among rural people. He called on the beneficiary communities to exhibit a good culture of maintenance to prolong the life of the systems.

A representative of DENG Engineering, the contractors of the project, Mr Idrisu Baba Alabira said three beneficiary districts have been selected in each of the three Northern Regions. The system would be installed in three non-formal learning centres and have the capacity to provide light for 30 adult learners. He said the project has a user-training component that allowed the community members to do the necessary maintenance.
