Winneba (C/R), Oct. 23, GNA - The number of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) in the Awutu-Effutu-Senya District of the Central Region, which recorded zero percent in the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) has dropped from nine last year to three this year. Mr Solomon Kwashie Abbam-Quaye, District Chief Executive for the area, disclosed this at the first national delegates meeting of the Graduate Students Association of Ghana (GRASAG) at Winneba, to deliberate on issues pertaining to the development of the association at the weekend.
The DCE pointed out that even though it was an improvement upon that of the previous academic year, he was not happy. Mr Abbam-Quaye said measures had been put in place to reverse the trend and charged all stakeholders in the education in the District, especially parents to live up to expectation.
He urged teachers and circuit officers to intensify their duties to improve basic education in the district.
Mr Abbam-Quaye urged parents to discourage their children in school to shun video shows, concert parties and funerals and to study hard to improve their educational performance. He said that the District Assembly was sponsoring 68 teacher-trainees who would work in the area after their training to help improve education.
The DCE disclosed that the district had been allocated Five Billion and Four Hundred Million Cedis as its share of the common fund this year and stated that greater part of the amount would be used to enhance education.
He appealed parents with children of school going age to take advantage of Capitation grant to enrol them.
