The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has given notice that it will continue to demolish churches and other buildings constructed without permits.
On Friday, the Assembly demolished churches operating without permits and also pulled down the Fruits of Life Ministry Church building in Bubiashie which was operating without license.
Speaking on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News, the Director of the Public Health Department at the AMA , Dr Simpson Anim Boateng indicated that the exercise was to rid the city of people who are not law abiding and operating without permits.
According to him, the Assembly undertook the demolition exercise because most churches operate in residential areas without permits and disturbing residents as well.
He noted that before the exercise took place, the affected persons were served written notices as well as verbal warning.
“With reference to the exercise at Bubiashie the people were served written notices over a year ago and also by verbally warning him, we don’t take people by surprise, we always prompt them before we act”
Dr. Anim Boateng argued that the exercise is meant to serve as a deterrent to others who are also operating without the requisite permit.
He added that any building that “it is not in conformity with the law; we will go ahead and do what we must do. It is not going to be a nine day wonder served.”
