Awutu Bawjiase C/R, NOV. 5, GNA- The Central Regional Chapter of the Association of Rural Banks (ARB) has presented a cheque for five million cedis and food items worth five million cedis to Awutu Bawjiase orphanage to support the up-keep of the inmates.
The items include 10 bags of rice, a bag of sugar, four cartons of key soap, five satchets of Yazz soap, four cartons of milk and two cartons of toilet role.
The presentation of the cheque and food items to the orphanage by the ARB Central Chapter formed part of the activities marking the week-long celebration of rural banking in Ghana.
Mr. Kweku Acquaah, President of the Chapter of the Association said the item items were contributed by the 21 banks in the Central Region as part of their social responsibility to cater for the orphans. He stated that aside, the banks have been assisting communities with the construction of schools, clinics, provision of water and electricity, adding that the time has come to help the underprivileged children.
Mr. Acquaah noted that the fate of children, who ended up at the orphanage were not fault of theirs, but due to nature on most often than not, the irresponsible behaviour on the part of their parents. He stressed that the chapter executives would impress upon the individual banks to periodically make donations to support the management of the orphanage.
Mrs. Emma Boafo, Founder of the home said she started the orphanage with four children at Winneba in 1981 and moved to Awutu Bawjiase in 1983.
There are 132 children now at the orphanage between the ages of 8 months and 18 years, she said, adding saying that 11 of them have entered Senior Secondary School I this year.
Mrs. Boafo said the Home had to pay about 3 million cedis as fees on the children and this had made it extremely difficult for the Home to make ends meet.
She, in this regard appealed for regular sponsors who would be able to contribute at least, offer 500,000 cedis and one million cedis monthly to help the children.
The Founder of the home appealed to the government and companies to construct rehabilitation centre at the orphanage to ensure the proper moulding of the children.
