Help is yet to come to teachers and school pupils of Abakam Cran Basic School in the Cape Coast Metropolis after a rainstorm ripped off the roofing sheets of the entire basic school about three months ago.
The community cited on the Cape Coast - Elmina highway is one of the areas hardest hit during rain storms in the Cape Coast Metropolis.
For close to two weeks; with the inception of the rains, school teachers and students in this community have found teaching and learning a very difficult task as the recent rains have again dealt a hefty blow to the school.
The school pupils and the teachers now have no choice, but to organize classes in the auditorium of the Global Evangelical Church building situated in the community.
Assistant headmistress of the school, Rosemary Dometsie, told Western regional correspondent Richard Kojo Nyarko, “putting all the students together into one open space without any demarcation is affecting students’ concentration in class.”
She lamented, “If you teach, it depends on how interesting the subject is because others will leave their lessons and be doing other things as their teachers keep talking with no one concentrating.”
“At times, because students are not concentrating, something you will need to use just two periods to teach, would have to be treated for two to three days,” she added.
She also complained that some students had lost interest in attending classes as it now took teachers sending for students to be called from the communities before filling classes for academic work to proceed.
To the students, help is needed thick and fast to make their studies more comfortable.
Some of the students that spoke to ultimate radio expressed concerns about difficulties in concentrating during classes.
A form three JHS student whose final examination is days away, bemoaned, “I feel very uncomfortable when I am studying because a lot of the students make noise and concentrating on my books becomes very difficult.”
Richard Kojo Nyarko describes that the school building is currently in a deplorable state without roofs and soaked with rain water with cracks all over the walls.
He reported that the school authorities were now helpless in salvaging the situation with little hope that government will come to their aid.
