The four-month old baby girl, who was abandoned by the mother at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) about a month ago, has been handed over to the Kumasi Children’s Home.

The home is a destitute facility run by the Department of Social Welfare.

Mr Peter Osei, a social welfare officer at the hospital told Ghana News Agency that this followed the refusal of the mother to show up to claim the baby despite extensive reports in the media.

The two institutions – KATH and Social Welfare Department, signed the relevant legal documents to complete her transfer to the orphanage on Monday.

Mrs Theresa Amoateng, Principal Midwifery Officer-in-charge of ‘A2’ Rooming inward at KATH, where the baby had been kept said she “is in good condition”.

The little girl is the fourth baby to be abandoned at the ward within a space of three years, and she described these happenings as troubling.

Mrs Amoateng advised women, especially young ladies to “count the cost” before going in for unprotected sex, which could result in unwanted pregnancies.

The baby’s mother, who had ostensibly gone to KATH to seek treatment for the baby, left her with a patient with the excuse to ease herself and never returned.
