Obogu (Ash), May 22, GNA - An abandoned bridge under construction on the Obogu-Manso road in the Asante Akim South District is posing threat to motorists and pedestrians. The bridge, which is over the River Kume was abandoned in 2006. Anytime it rains, flood comes to the area. A number of accident cases have been recorded out of which four lives have been lost in the area. At present all the culverts have been covered. The contract awarded to B.A. Iseng Limited and scheduled to be completed within four months. Mrs Georgina Bimpong, Assembly Member for Banso West, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the situation had deteriorated to the extent that passengers had to alight to enable vehicles pass whenever they reached the spot. She wondered why a four-month contract should have been delayed for two years and called for immediate steps to compel the contractor to complete the work. Mrs Bimpong also appealed to the District Assembly and relevant authorities to as a matter of urgency address the problem to save lives. Mr Abdul Karim Boakye-Yiadom, District Chief Executive (DCE), for the area when contacted said, the contractor had been asked to return to the site of the project. He urged the people to remain calm as he worked around the clock to address the problem, saying, the project would be completed by the close of the week.
