Accra, July 17, GNA - The Government has been commended for transferring Pre-school Education from the Department of Social Welfare to the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Ms Gladys Otchere, Assistant Director of Education at Accra Metropolitan Education Directorate, who gave the commendation at the third graduation ceremony of Mothercare School, East Cantonments Accra, said the new arrangement would improve the efficiency and effectiveness of Pre-school Education.

She said: "Pre-school is the mother of all schools because that is where our kids are trained socially, academically, physically, culturally, morally and emotionally."

Ms Otchere also commended Mothercare School for the high academic and moral training it has been giving to the students, most of whom get admission to first class senior secondary schools, and urged the teachers to redouble their efforts to further improve on the performance of the school.

The Outgoing Girls Prefect, Anita Akuamoah-Boateng thanked the staff of the school for their diligence and devotion to duty that had made it one of the best in the country. She said the school had taken the right path of instilling the democratic culture into the students by allowing them to elect their own leaders and called on the incoming prefects not to lord it over their colleagues.

Mrs Sheila Segbedzi nee Acquah-Asare, Director of the School, said Mrs Theodora Acquah-Asare started the school as a nursery with seven children at the residence of the late Brigadier Acquah Asare at Burma Camp in 1965.

She said the school now has a population of more than 500 pupils and students from Pre-school to the Junior Secondary School (JSS) level, adding that the first batch of JSS graduates in 2002 scored 100 per cent passes with Ms Yaa Serwaa Owusu Adansi obtaining nine-ones in the Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE). 17 July 04
