Ms Samia Yaba Nkrumah, Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) has paid glowing tribute to the late President John Evans Atta Mills, describing him as “a fine president who exhibited political tolerance and patience in his relationship with opponents within and outside his party.

She also expressed “her deepest gratitude” to the late President for spearheading a number of programmes in honour of her father, Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

These included the celebration of his centenary, his picture on one side of the two cedi note, his birthday being observed as a national holiday and his statue at the forecourt of the African Union (AU) building in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia .

Ms. Nkrumah, was accompanied by the flagbearer of the CPP, Dr. Abu Sakara, with a delegation of party executives to extend words of consolation to the family of the late President Atta Mills at Nkanfoa.

She said each time she sees any of these monuments which would go a long way in preserving the heritage of Dr. Nkrumah, she would not only remember her father but also President Mills.

The CPP flag bearer, who described the President Mills as ‘dedicated and selfless’ said his death was a blow to him because he was a ‘true comrade’ who followed the footsteps of CPP’s founder, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

“Ghana needs another President who is peaceful and has great values like the late Professor Mills,” he said.

The leader of the No.5 Asafo Company of the Oguaa Traditional Area and executive member of CPP, Supi Araba Bentsil Enchil, also expressed shock over the President’s death and described him as a ‘humble and charismatic man of peace’ who did not serve Ghana or Africa alone but the entire human race .

She pledged the party’s support during the burial and encouraged the family to be strong and not give attention to any hearsay which might hinder the peaceful and befitting funeral being planned for the late President.

Dr. Cadman Mills, a brother of the late President, who spoke on behalf of the family, thanked the CPP for the visit saying it was a sign of their love and respect for peace and unity just like the founder of their party, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.

He said the late President was a patriotic Ghanaian who appreciated the good works of Dr. Nkrumah thus the honour he accorded him.

The delegation earlier paid a courtesy call on the Oguaa Traditional Council at the Emimtsimadze Palace in Cape Coast, where Dr. Sakara pledged that the CPP will conduct its political activities in peace.

He asked for prayers and support from the Traditional Council.

Nana Kwame Adu I, the Tufuhen of Cape Coast, who spoke on behalf of Nana Afari Twako II, the acting president of Oguaa Traditional Council, thanked the delegation for their call and commended them for being ambassadors of peace, a legacy of Prof. Atta-Mills, adding that the late President was a man par excellence who should be emulated by all leaders.

Some members of the delegation were Ivor Greenstreet, the party’s national secretary, Rhodaline Imoru Ayarna, the second national vice chairperson, Abu Fogor, the national organizer, a leading member, Bright Akwetey, and the parliamentary candidate for Cape Coast.

In a related development, Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah, a former Minister of Education and leading member of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) on the same day visited the family and signed the book of condolence.**
