Students of Mfantsipim Senior High School (SHS) have been asked to take their studies seriously since academic excellence was not a preserve for the school.

The Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joe Ghartey, who made the call, explained that there were equally good schools that could compete with Mfantsipim SHS considering the current educational system in the country.

He made the remarks at the celebration of this year’s Founders’ day of Mfantsipim SHS in Cape Coast, which was observed on the theme: “Academic Excellence: Goal to Fruitful working life”.

Mr Ghartey, who is also the Member of Parliament for Essikado/Ketan, and former student of the school, said considering the achievements of Mfantsipim School, it was now the responsibility of the current generation of students to take it to the next level of success.

The Right Reverend Dr. Brew Riverson, Former Administrative Bishop of the Methodist Church, Ghana, paid a glowing tribute to the founder members for their contribution to the school.

He said they helped in producing politicians, lawyers, doctors, engineers, architects and other professionals, who were contributing to national development.

Rt. Rev. Riverson urged the students to be disciplined and live by the principles and vision for which the school was established.

The clergyman, who is also former Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service, commended the students for winning the 2013 Sprite Ball Championship, and praised the teaching staff for their hard work and commitment to duty.

The school prefect of the 2012-2013 academic year presented GHC 1,800 from a special foundation, to two needy but brilliant students of the school.
